The Jacksonville Suns got a quality start from Robert Morey(3-2) and were able to hold off the Huntsville Stars late for a 3-2 victory Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.
The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an rbi single by Hector Gimenez.
The Suns took the lead for good in the top of the second against Huntsville starter Eric Marzec(1-3).
Brady Shoemaker and Alex Burg opened the inning with back to back singles. Two batters later, Isaac Galloway lined a bases clearing triple to the alley in right center giving the Suns a 2-1 lead.
The next batter Brent Keys extended the lead to 3-1. Keys lined a ball off the shortstop Yadiel Rivera’s glove scoring Galloway.
The Stars got a run closer in the bottom of the seventh. Adam Weisenburger led off with a solo homerun against Morey. It was Weisenburger’s second homerun of the year.
Morey worked six innings allowing five hits on two runs.
The Stars attempted a late comeback against Jacksonville’s closer Nick Wittgren in the ninth. With two on base and two outs, Nick Shaw swung at the first pitch and popped out to the shortstop Austin Nola to end the game.Wittgren collected his seventeenth save of the season.
Marzec, who took the loss pitched 5.2 innings and allowed five hits on three runs(two earned).
The Stars have now lost four straight.
The Stars(19-24, 65-48) trail the Suns(64-49, 28-15)3-0 in their five game series which continues Sunday afternoon. The Stars will have LHP Jed Bradley(4-5, 3.81) on the mound. Jacksonville will send LHP Justin Nicolino(9-3, 2.95) to the hill.
