MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirms a man who was shot earlier this month has died.

Michael McDonald was injured in a shooting on Aug. 2 and had been in the hospital until he died Friday, according to Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham.

According to the sheriff's department, officers responded at 11:45 a.m. to Mister Drive, off of Wares Ferry Road, in response to an individual who had been shot.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim in his vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Authorities say McDonald and his neighbor had an ongoing dispute over McDonald's wife -- a love triangle that resulted in McDonald being shot in the shoulder and slamming his truck into a light pole.

It's unclear at this time if that gunshot wound is the cause of his death. An autopsy will be conducted.

Sheriff officials say the neighbor admitted to shooting McDonald claiming self defense and citing documentation of the dispute.

McDonald's friend Steve Steele described his friend as a good volunteer, a good softball coach and a loving father.

"He's been involved in a program the last six years. He loved his family," Steele said. "If you have a dispute with somebody, talk about it, talk it out. Guns should never be an answer to a dispute. It's just tragic that so many disputes in Montgomery are ending this way and it's not necessary."

No homicide charges will be brought against the neighbor at this time because the sheriff's office is presenting the case to the grand jury.
