Louisiana State Police plans trip to Texas-Mexico for border security briefing

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson and Louisiana State House of Representatives Speaker of the House Chuck Kleckley are headed for the Texas-Mexico border next week for a security briefing by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The information about the trip was released to all media outlets Friday afternoon.

Col. Edmonson and Kleckly, along with a delegation of officials from Louisiana State Police will be briefed by intelligence officials and will have an air and marine tour of the border.

“Whether it is illegal drugs, illegal weapons or undocumented immigrants, Louisiana is affected daily by security issues at the Mexico border,” said Colonel Edmonson. “We continue to enjoy a strong partnership with our counterparts at Texas DPS who play a critical role in providing us intelligence and situational awareness with regards to border security issues.”

“Beyond my role as Speaker of the House, I represent the people of and reside in southwest Louisiana which is the first area of our state to be impacted by the criminal element entering Louisiana from Mexico by way of Texas,” said Speaker Kleckley. “I am committed to making sure that we at the State Capitol remain informed and take the appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our citizens.”

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
