DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Decatur police arrested three men from Illinois following an investigation into suspicious bank transactions.

An official with Bank Independent told investigators that a man was going to several branches making transactions with prepaid debit cards.

Police said the man, Jamari Farazz Sanford, used an alias and a fake Indiana driver's license to obtain at least $1,600 in cash from two Bank Independent locations in Athens. Bank officials said the man attempted to do the same thing at locations in Moulton and Decatur.

Thursday, Sanford allegedly tried to withdraw money again from the Beltline Road bank. Employees provided police with a description of Sanford's car.

Officers located and stopped the vehicle on Highway 67. Sanford was in the car with two other men, all of Chicago, Illinois: Kirk Robert Whetstone and Keith Massey Jones. Officers also found Ecstasy in the car, along with $5,000 in cash.

All three men were charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession or fraudulent use of a credit or debit card.

Whetstone, the driver of the vehicle, had a suspended license in Illinois and the car was impounded.

Investigators learned that at least four debit cards were used for an attempted check-in at a Huntsville hotel before one was accepted. Police recovered dozens of prepaid cards, all with the alias Percy Winters printed on them.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected to be made.
