Stars Drop Opener to Jacksvonville


Huntsville, AL-Jacksonville Suns RHP Jose Urena(10-7), the ninth ranked pitching prospect in the Miami Marlins system threw seven shutout innings leading his Jacksonville Suns past the Huntsville Stars 8-1 Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

Isaac Galloway led the Suns offense with a 3-5 performance and had 4 rbi’s.

Drew Gagnon(7-6), the Huntsville starter allowed six runs(three earned) in his 5.2 innings.

The Suns took a 2-0 lead off Gagnon in the top of the fourth.  With two outs and runners at second and third base, Gagnon issued a wild pitch that allowed J.T. Realmuto to score for the first run.  Galloway then singled into left which scored Brent Keys.

In the top of the sixth, the Suns added to their lead.  Brady Shoemaker singled.  Joe Benson then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Robinson Diaz.

Two batters later, Galloway drilled a two-run triple down the left field line making it 4-0.  The pitcher then helped himself out as Urena tripled to shallow right as Kentrail Davis couldn’t make the diving catch.  Galloway scored on the triple giving Jacksonville a 5-0 advantage.

Austin Nola also provided an rbi single in the four-run sixth for a 6-0 lead.

The Suns scored their final two runs in the eighth against reliever Tommy Toledo.

Galloway extended the lead to 7-0 with an rbi double and Nola singled home Galloway on an rbi single, making it 8-0 Suns.

Urena, who allowed just five hits in his seven frames, turned it over to the Suns bullpen to try and keep the shutout intact.

The Stars were able to avoid the shutout in the ninth.  With one out, Nick Ramirez grounded out to second base off Suns reliever Jheyson Manzueta.  Ramirez’s groundout scored Nick Shaw to make it 8-1.

The Stars(19-22, 65-46) trail the Suns(62-49,26-15)1-0 in their five game series which continues Friday night.  The Stars will have RHP Jacob Barnes(2-5, 5.01) on the mound.  Jacksonville will send RHP James Nygren(3-2, 3.55) to the hill.  The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:15 PM CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and
