HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The City of Huntsville and University of Alabama Huntsville announced a new partnership Thursday to address clean energy issues and bring more jobs to the Tennessee Valley.

As part of the Energy Huntsville Initiative, UAH leaders said the partnership means school researchers will use their expertise to assist the city in achieving its energy savings vision.

Mayor Battle believes the partnership will also mean clean energy companies will seriously look at launching or relocating in Huntsville. He said creating that type of academic environment only makes this area that much more marketable.

The Energy Huntsville Initiative already has hundreds of local companies they partner with to address clean energy issues. Battle said UAH joining those ranks gives them major credibility and boosts the economy.

"We have over 2,000 employees in the energy field," said Battle. "Once we looked at that, we said this is a field that will continue to grow, it became an area that we looked at as an area of diversification of our economy."

Mayor Battle said his ultimate goal is for this initiative to turn into a feeder program for UAH students.

They will work hand in hand with these companies while in school, and then get hired full time when they graduate.
