HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An American flag that has been to space and back took residence at a new home Wednesday.

The United Space Alliance presented the framed flag to the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville this morning.

The flag flew aboard the Shuttle Endeavour in 2001.

It's surrounded by pins from every shuttle mission that ever flew. Space and Rocket CEO Dr. Deborah Barnhart has big plans for the special gift.

"This is about to become the cornerstone of an entirely new exhibition," Barnhart said. "The building that you see behind us over here is going to become nothing but the shuttle story here at shuttle park."

Wednesday's ceremony was a celebration of the space shuttle program, which ended three years ago.
