HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The head of the Madison County Republican Executive Committee is stepping down after serving for two years.

Chairman John Como's resignation took effect last Friday.

He calls this a personal decision and says he's stepping down because of several family members that are ill that live in both New York and Georgia.

On the phone Wednesday, Como said it's the right time to resign and let someone take charge that can run the position with a clear mind.

He said there's no scandal involved, and realizes people are going to think what they want to, but he's solely focused on helping his family at this time.

He's spent the last several weeks up in New York dealing with his family's health issues.

The Madison County Republican Executive Committee says a new chairman will be elected at the August 18 meeting.

It's unclear who is in the running.
