HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A former Madison County Commission employee began her jail term Monday.

Deborah Kay Sims turned herself in to Metro Jail officials. Sims pleaded guilty in May to theft and ethics charges.

Authorities said she stole $150,000 while employed for the commission. A judge sentenced her to one year in county jail in June, but a previously scheduled medical procedure delayed her incarceration.

Once her sentence is completed, Sims will be released on probation.
