JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Ron Fossett, the mayor of the Jackson County town of Section, was found guilty Monday on charges of driving while under the influence.

The mayor was arrested in June 2013 by a then-part-time Section police officer near Fossett's home, after an off-duty Scottsboro police officer saw a car driving erratically and called 911.

Testimony in the trial revealed the mayor was going to fire officer Barry Munza that night. Munza said he worked for a short time after the arrest.

The officer testified Fossett admitted to having two wine coolers and that he found a mixed drink in the car's console. When he was about to arrest the mayor, Munza said Fossett told him he was fired and ordered him to turn in his patrol car.

Jail officials testified the mayor repeated the statement he intended to fire the officer.

Fossett was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but the judge suspended that sentence. He was also ordered to pay $600 in fines and $550 in court costs. Fossett's attorney said they plan to appeal to the circuit court.
