Back-to-school shopping may not have gotten easier, but it certainly can be cheaper. Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee all continue to offer tax-free shopping holidays for specific school-related items this year during the first weekend in August. Alabama's tax free holiday weekend for back to school purchases is 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. The annual event began in 2006 and is a common practice across the nation. Jefferson County will not be participating but cities in Jefferson County will which means you will still pay 2 percent sales tax on exempt items. For a complete list of participating or non-participating counties and cities for Alabama, go to revenue.alabama.gov. Sales tax exempt status also applies to online purchases. Customers need to make sure the online retailer deducts the tax amount, if not call customer service immediately to get a refund. So get out this weekend and save. And don't forget to patronize small business owners as well. I'm Vanessa Oubre that's My take what's yours?
