CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

The threat of the West Nile virus is all too real now, after a victim of the sickness died last week right here in Caddo Parish.

State health authorities said the victim was between the ages of 60 to 74. This is the first confirmed death from the virus this year in the state.

This West Nile case is one of four confirmed last week in the parish.

The state Department of Health and Hospitals says there are ways to protect yourself from the virus:

  • You're urged to wear mosquito repellent if you spend any time outside and wear long-sleeved shirts and pants;
  • Also, try to avoid using perfumes and colognes while outdoors;
  • Finally, make sure that your house has tight-fitting windows and doors, and that all screens are free of holes.

"We use insect repellent and we try to stay inside as much as possible," said Shreveport resident Johna Hall.

A DHH spokesman said they have seen fewer cases of West Nile this year compared to last.

She said mosquito season typically lasts until October or November.
