BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County authorities say they have arrested the man suspected of pouring gasoline on his ex-girlfriend and setting her on fire on Sunday.

Michael Kennedy was apprehended in Midfield around 4 p.m. on Monday. Sgt. Roger Morris of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said he was arrested without incident.

Kennedy will be booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a $60,000 bond for domestic violence and attempted murder.

The victim, Kennedy's ex-girlfriend, is not doing well, according to her sister. She is now in critical condition.

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies responded to a house fire call in the 4400 block of Nellie Anderson Street on Sunday morning.

They found a 49-year-old woman with extensive burns to her head, arms, upper body and legs. She was taken to an area hospital and admitted to their burn unit in serious condition.

The investigation revealed that the victim had been in a dating relationship with the suspect, 48-year-old Michael Kennedy of Mulga, for three years. The victim ended the relationship about a month ago and the suspect left.

Early Sunday morning, deputies say Kennedy returned to the home, the two argued and Kennedy poured gasoline on the victim and set her on fire. The fire also burned a carpeted area inside the home.
