AL crime rate down in 2013, 2014 second consecutive year for decrease

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

According to a new report the crime rate in Alabama went down 4 percent in 2013. The report comes from the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center. It looks at robberies, property crimes and homicides.

According to the report, in 2013 law enforcement agencies reported more than 174,000 crimes. That's down from 2012 when it was almost 182,000. The biggest drop was in burglaries.

The report showed that 24 percent of the crimes were cleared by arrests or other means, which is the highest clearance rate within the previous five years. When it comes to homicides here in Huntsville, as of July 26, 2014, we have 11. No arrests have been made in four of them.

According to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center, 2014 is the second consecutive year for a decrease statewide.
