HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Some Huntsville residents now have the tools to keep their family safe.

Lowe's held its first community safe day. Officials with local emergency responders were set up at the home improvement store on Saturday to give customers a hands-on look at what they do every day. A fingerprinting clinic for kids was also offered, and the first 100 families received a free smoke detector.

“We decided to have a safety day in order to promote awareness for the kids and the first responders out there,” said store manager Peter Anderson. “Some of them have some fears of adults and we wanted to let them know that these folks are out here to help them and keep them safe in situations where they need to be able to trust an adult.”

Organizers are already planning 2015’s event.
