ASU board chairman resigns, vice chairman refuses

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University Board of Trustees Chairman Elton Dean announced Thursday in an emotional radio interview with campus radio station WVAS that he is resigning his position on the board.

The same cannot be said of Vice Chairman Judge Marvin Wiggins who, also on WVAS, announced his refusal to step down.

Governor Robert Bentley gave both men until 5 p.m. to respond to his letters seeking their voluntary resignations.

The governor has the power to remove a board member, but it is not clear at this time what, if anything, the governor will do in reaction to Wiggins' refusal.

When asked for reaction, the governor's office said Bentley had not yet received any official confirmation from either man regarding their decisions.

The governor issued his letters the day after ASU Student Government Association President Darren Dubose demanded the trustees' resignations and in the wake of the university's announcement the previous Friday that it received official notice of a six-month warning from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission of Colleges, or SACSCOC.

In that notice, SACS came down hard on ASU, citing both Dean and Wiggins as having conflicts of interest while serving on the board.

SACS placed much of the blame for the warning on the board of trustees.
