HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

We are less than two weeks away from the day all kids in North Alabama dread - the first day of school! But before the kids go back into the hallowed halls of school, the teachers have a few lessons of their own to learn.

Thursday morning, Huntsville city school teachers got some specialized training thanks to the "Leading the Way" initiative. The project gives teachers new methods to use in the classroom, specifically in math and science.

The goal is to have students be better problem-solvers, teaching them to come up with solutions through action, not memorization.

"We've had them here all week," said Elementary Programs Specialist Dottie Creel. "It's a two-and-a-half day training, at least 20 hours that the teachers have to put in. Then they have homework that they do."

The project is usually reserved for middle and high school teachers, but this year elementary school educators were invited to join.
