HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - People have been waiting in line to adopt or foster at Huntsville Animal Services since shelter officials said a respiratory illness threatened the lives of hundreds of dogs at their facility.

Huntsville Animal Services announced Tuesday that several dogs had contracted an upper respiratory infection that is highly contagious among dogs. The shelter said that it would have to euthanize the infected dogs and all healthy dogs were in danger as long as they were in the facility.

Wednesday, employees said they have been able to get the outbreak under control thanks to the help of the community.

“We don’t have but a handful that we’re treating right now,” Animal Care Supervisor Karen Buchan said. “And we’ve got a good handle on it. We just want to get the animals out of here so we can really disinfect the shelter.”

As far as the animals that are sick, Buchan said since it was only a few dogs and they caught it early the infected dogs should make a full recovery. Buchan said they are currently separated from the other dogs and getting treated.
