FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A new community garden is now open in Florence. Organizers hope the garden will serve as an educational tool as well as help put food on the table.

Community members and local leaders were on hand for the Tuesday ribbon-cutting at the Shoals Community Clinic. Gardeners have already been hard at work planting throughout the summer, and some of the greens have already sprouted vegetables.

Clinic leaders hope the garden will teach families how to grow their own food and provide them with healthier meal options.

"This area is low-income and this is public housing, so people don't have a garden plot of their own here," said the clinic's Bonita McCay. "By having these beds here at the clinic, they can have a place to grow food. Food has been one of the most expensive items now in anybody's budget."

The community garden is located just outside the clinic, near Handy Homes in West Florence.
