GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A Marshall County man is under arrest for leaving the scene of an accident after a bicyclist was hit and injured.

Police said a red Jeep hit a man riding a bicycle on Highway 431 in Guntersville around 9:20 a.m.

The Jeep turned around and returned to the scene before driving away.

Guntersville police are investigating it as a hit-and-run. Officers pulled over the suspect's vehicle on Highway 431 in Albertville shortly after the incident.

They searched the Jeep and arrested 33-year-old Robert Wesley Westmoreland of Boaz. He is charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident.

The cyclist, 55-year-old Presume Mibias of Haiti, was taken to the hospital with what authorities called "possibly life-threatening" injuries.

"Mr. Mibias was ejected from the bicycle and sustained substantial injuries," said Police Chief Jim Peterson. "He was flown out by air ambulance to Huntsville Hospital."

Mibias' official condition has not been released. Police say more charges could be forthcoming against Westmoreland.
