HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville police are searching for a group of men that took off into the woods and left their vehicle when a patrol car came near them.

It happened around 1 p.m. off of Bateson Street, which sits off Blue Spring Road in North Huntsville.

Multiple investigators surrounded the vehicle collecting evidence. They had several collection bags out, and a police spokesperson confirmed they did discover a safe.

Police said when the patrol car turned the corner onto Bateson, a group of men exited the vehicle and ran into the woods. They didn't say anything, and police said they are still at large.

Patrol cars circled the area looking for the men as investigators searched the group's car. Investigators are working to determine who the safe belongs to. Police have not revealed what else was found inside the vehicle.

If you have information on the group that fled the scene or the owner of the safe, you are asked to call Huntsville police.
