MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Girl Scout camp is celebrated a reopening on Friday in Marshall County. The camp was closed two years before by the Girl Scouts, but protests stopped the sale of it.

However, thanks to community support, it's now back in business.

Officials said the community really came together to get the camp reopened. It's not going to be a camp just for the Girl Scouts anymore, but for the community.

With Girl Scouts in the background, officials held a ribbon cutting for the reopening of Camp Trico. The Girl Scout camp opened back in the early 1950's, but officials decided to close it and three other Girl Scout camps two in 2012. However, volunteers came together to get it reopened.

Milly Breeden said they were able to find donors and people to give their time, talent, and treasure to working on the ageing facility and get it in shape for use again. Breeden said it will mean something to the young people who use the facility for decades to come.

“Camping builds character and self esteem that you can't get in other places,” said Breeden. “ My children have told me over the years how much they gained from going to Camp Trico, and you get that from all camps. Camping is a great thing.”

To help with funding, Breeden said it will be open for use by other groups and uses such as the Boy Scouts, family reunions, or even weddings.
