HOMEWOOD, AL (WBRC) -

Wells Fargo announced Thursday that it is eliminating 468 jobs at its Homewood mortgage servicing center.  The company says the decision was made because fewer home loan customers are in risk of default and no longer need payment assistance.  The Homewood office serves customers in need of financial assistance nationwide.

"Our decision was made with great concern for the team members who are affected.  They have been an essential part of our success in home preservation, " spokesperson Jay Lawrence said via news release.  "The team members at Wildwood alone helped save thousands of homes.  We are very grateful for their service," said Lawrence.

A total of 481 mortgage servicing team members are being eliminated nationwide, with 468 coming from Homewood.  All employees were notified Thursday morning.  Wells Fargo is giving affected employees a 60-day notice of termination.  Depending on the time of service, an affected employee may also be eligible for severance pay.

The Wildwood facility will remain open with a reduced staff of 724 employees.  "Birmingham is the headquarters of our Mid-South Region and is a major employment center for us," said Lawrence.
