Houston County sheriff to step down for state post

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes is stepping down from his position to work as assistant homeland security director with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Hughes tells the Dothan Eagle (http://bit.ly/1l4KtqH ) his last day as sheriff will be Aug. 17 and he'll assume his new role the next day.

Hughes says Gov. Robert Bentley will appoint a new sheriff to replace him wand the Republican Executive Committee will have to appoint a candidate to take his place on the ballot in the Nov. 4 general election.

Hughes was elected sheriff in 2006 when he beat incumbent Lamar Glover.
