HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, workplace violence is the number one cause of death for women at work.

The Women’s Business Center of North Alabama attempted to combat that statistic by holding a seminar about workplace safety and employee rights. The 2-hour long event was held Tuesday at the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce.

The center teamed up with Bradley Arant Boult Cummings to discuss combating and preventing workplace violence and company liability. The seminar also addressed second-amendment rights in the workplace. An Alabama law passed last year allows people with concealed carry permits to keep their guns in their car during the workday.

Program Director Erin Bloxham Curtis said even though the law was established last year people still had a lot of questions about their legal rights.

“We hope they come away educated and knowing what the gray areas might be,” Bloxham Curtis said. “And by addressing workplace violence we hope to make a more efficient and safe environment.”

Experts at Wednesday's event recommend employers take proactive steps to eliminate workplace violence by establishing pre-employment screening and ways to report threats.

"We hope they will take away some concrete ideas on how to recognize some risks and steps they can implement to reduce those risks," said Associate Attorney Elizabeth Hamrick.

They also stressed the importance of calling law enforcement for assistance in any potentially dangerous situation.
