Hundreds of Madison County men took advantage of free prostate screening at the Health Department.

More than 200 men turned out for Wednesday’s screening offered at the Madison County Health Department.

“That’s the most we’ve ever done in Madison County,” said the Health Department’s Kathie Limbach. She went on to say the big turnout was the most at one location in the state.

Statistics provided by the Alabama Department of Public health show one in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

Age, family history and race are some of the risk factors for prostate cancer in men. Men who are at a higher risk for prostate cancer are encouraged to begin getting tested at age 45.

Medical experts do not know what causes prostate cancer or how to prevent it.

Different types of treatment are available according to the Centers for Diseases Control. http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/prostate/basic_info/treatment.htm
