Winners of 2014 National Volunteers Contest announced in latest issue; $25,000 in grants to support families' charities of choice

NEW YORK, July 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Recognizing the importance and lasting benefits of volunteering as a family, FamilyFun magazine announces the winners of its ninth annual National Volunteers Contest in the June/July issue, along with partners Disney's Friends for Change and generationOn. Chosen for their creative community service ideas, hard work and dedication, nine winning families will receive a total of $25,000 in grants to support their charities of choice.

"We are continually impressed with how families are making a difference on local and national levels," said Ann Hallock, Editor-in-chief, FamilyFun magazine. "In addition to the positive effects on others, these families have experienced a unique way of giving back together – from raising funds for national charities through art, to preparing local pets for adoption."

Each winning family's story is featured in the June/July issue of FamilyFun, currently available on newsstands, iPad, and on The four grand-prize winners will receive $5,000 each and five first-prize winners will each receive $1,000 for their chosen charities, provided by The Walt Disney Company. Prize money will go towards projects devoted to an array of important causes – the Tourette Syndrome Association, local hospitals, and educational supplies for underprivileged youth included.

"Research has shown that volunteering helps kids learn about social issues and shows them positive role models. And working together as a family provides a great learning and bonding experience for kids and parents alike," said Hallock.

Grand-Prize Winners:

  • The Cunningham Family of College Station, Texas – Created a donation program of books and blankets for low-income students
  • The Varanelli Family of Chantilly, Virginia – Hosted kids' art show to raise funds for the Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA)
  • The Martin Family of Sycamore, Illinois – Collects and donates Halloween costumes for families in need
  • The Long Family of Paola, Kansas – Creates and delivers craft kits to local hospital patients

First-Prize Winners:

  • The DuMont/Byrne Family of Highland Village, Texas – Runs a summer preschool program for refugee kids
  • The Miller Family of Kailua, Hawaii – Raises funds for the American Diabetes Association with bottle-cap art
  • The Roe Family of Palatine, Illinois – Crafts and sells handmade bracelets and jump ropes to raise money for local families in need
  • The Salmon Family of Pekin, Illinois – Started a cancer awareness kids' club to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
  • The Wojtasiak Family of Monona, Wisconsin – Runs a pet rescue organization where they prepare pets for adoption
