ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Athens police said a theft suspect tried to make a break for it while being interviewed about stolen checks Monday.

Officers were called to the Walmart store in Athens about 8:30 a.m., where an employee had seen a man remove several items from packages and leave the store without paying.

The man was located a short time later walking along U.S. 31. Joshua Scanlan was arrested on a third-degree theft charge.

While at the police department, an investigator interviewed Scanlan about checks that had been stolen from Madison and cashed at Redstone Federal Credit Union. When the investigator left the room, officers said Scanlan ran out of the room, down the stairs and out the back door of the police department.

Officers quickly caught Scanlan in the parking lot. He was taken back into custody and charged with three counts of possession of forged instruments and one count of third-degree escape.
