Green Pest Control Options Provide Safer Alternatives

Sacramento, CA–In some ways, non-chemical options for pest control are not new. Orange oil has been used as an insecticide since 1958. “Commercial grade orange oil is common in household cleaners,” said Jim Lopez, President and CEO at Pinnacle Pest Control in Sacramento. “It’s also a very effective way to kill termites–just as effective as traditional chemical fumigation, but a lot better for the environment and safer for families and pets.”

Pinnacle is one company that has turned increasingly toward greener alternatives. Lopez said Pinnacle strives to use minimal amounts of environmentally sensitive products throughout the process. “We’re committed to providing services in a chemically safe and environmentally friendly manner.”

For termite treatment, the use of commercial orange oil (also called D-limonene) can result in much lower costs to a homeowner, too, said Lopez. Traditional tenting methods often mean that a family incurs costs for motels, pet boarding, and eating out, because they need to stay away from the premises until the chemicals dissipate to a safe level. “Orange oil is safe, so people can stay in their homes during treatment.”

Orange oil is a naturally occurring chemical found in plants, flowers and trees. D-limonene is a byproduct of orange juice manufacturing, and is a renewable resource. Lopez said the orange oil treatment is proven to be effective and carries the same guarantee as fumigation.

Another increasingly common pest problem in the Sacramento area and throughout the country is bed bugs. Bed bugs have been found in airplane seats, trains, cabs, hotel rooms, and even doctor’s offices. They easily “hitchhike” on clothing, bedding, backpacks, etc., making their way into homes where they rapidly multiply. Though many people have no reaction to bed bug bites, some experience small red welts that often appear in a line or cluster and may be itchy or painful. Serious health problems can occur if the bites become infected.

Professional heat treatments offer another environmentally friendly and safe way to control bed bugs. The interior temperature of the infected area is heated to around 150 degrees and maintained for an hour to kill the bugs. Trained technicians monitor the heat to ensure it reaches and stays at the proper level.

“People should know that these latest pest control treatments are just as effective as harsh chemicals, and are so much safer for them and their families,” said Lopez. “And they have the added benefit of being much better for the environment, too.”
