UPDATE: 10:30 p.m. Train was also carrying nail polish and chemicals used in nail polish.

UPDATE: 10:00 p.m. Crews are now saying 14 cars derailed from the train.

Correction: 8:20 p.m. The previous version of this story stated a hazmat team had determined the public was not at risk. The Department of Emergency Management says the team is still assessing the area and has not made a final determination.

WYTHEVILLE (WSLS) - The Captain of Wythe County Rescue Squad confirms that a train has derailed in Wythe County.

Officials from multiple agencies have responded to the scene. The derailment happened at the beginning at the railroad line's intersection with Grayson Turnpike.

According to H.M Kidd with Wythe County Rescue Squad, a few train cars carrying automobiles derailed in the county.

Dawn Eischen with the Department of Emergency Management says a hazmat team was called in and they are assessing the situation.

The Norfolk Southern engineer says that the train was carrying 33 cars, approximately nine of which derailed.

Rick Arnold, Chief of Police for the Town of Wytheville said that local officials are advising the public to avoid travel through the area.

No injuries have been reported. No information on any possible cause for the derailment was available.
