TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Officials with the Coronado National Forest warn the public not to worry if they see smoke visible from Mt. Lemmon, beginning July 15.

Santa Catalina Ranger District personnel said the Coronado National Forest will burn piles of stacked wood, possibly for several days, on Mt. Lemmon in the vicinities of Mt. Bigelow and Spencer Canyon. They said the smoke might be visible in Tucson.

Recent rainfall created favorable conditions to burn about 20 acres of wood cut and piled as part of the Spencer/Bigelow fuels reduction project, according to a news release.  The goal is to reduce the amount of woody fuels present in the area to inhibit the potential for large wildfires.

For more information, call the Santa Catalina Ranger District Office at (520) 749-8700 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
