Former sheriff arrested after chase by troopers

Posted: Updated:

RUTLEDGE, Tenn. (AP) - A former Grainger County sheriff and current mayoral candidate has been charged with drunk driving after police say he ran into at least one tombstone while leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase.

Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers arrested Richard Jay McElhaney on Saturday night and charged him with driving under the influence, evading arrest, reckless driving, among other charges.

WBIR-TV in Knoxville reported (http://on.wbir.com/1nxZd61 ) that McElhaney fled from troopers after they tried to stop him with the chase reaching speeds of more than 115 mph.

Troopers say the pursuit ended when McElhaney turned into parking lot behind Rutledge United Methodist, drove through the middle of the cemetery, and smashed into at least one tombstone.

McElhaney posted a $4,500 bond Sunday morning.

Jail records did not list an attorney for McElhaney.
