HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Monday night citizens' work session scheduled by Huntsville City Schools has been canceled, per a request by a federal judge.

A statement by School Board Vice President Laurie McCaulley cited a request by Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala, who presided over the re-zoning hearing between the school system and the Department of Justice, and who ordered the two parties begin mediation

The judge made her request after referencing a news article in which McCaulley said the meeting was for the public to help create a template for the upcoming mediation. Haikala told an assembled courtroom Friday that the mediator alone would decide that template.

"It was my intention to present the opportunity for citizen engagement in a forum that the public could embrace and the court would consider meaningful and transparent," McCaulley said.

"As an elected official, I would never intentionally do anything that would jeopardize the integrity of the judicial process," she continued. "Therefore, in the spirit of good faith, the... work session will be canceled."

The statement went on to say that the meeting or any further conversations would be re-scheduled whenever Judge Haikala would consider it appropriate.
