HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A State Senator is taking action to protect bicyclists in Alabama after a local man is hit by a car.

Senator Arthur Orr wants to implement a bill requiring drivers to stay three feet from bike riders for their safety.

Walter Ham was riding his bike in Priceville in July 2013 when 85-year-old Rufus Nix hit him. Nix was charged with vehicular manslaughter in June 2014. Senator Orr said he plans to introduce a bill to prevent accidents like this if nobody else will. He said bike riders and drivers should share the road.

Bicyclist David Newsome has a metal plate in his shoulder after being hit by a car. He said this bill is necessary for bicyclist safety.

“To be riding and have somebody buzz you 6 inches from their rear view mirror, it's just, you’re just really exposed and you need that cushion just to feel safe that we can actually make it home from our bike ride," said bicyclist, David Newsome.

Senator Orr said this proposed law's goal should be educational, not punishment.
