AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn's planning commission is moving ahead on the community's downtown master plan.
Planning Director Forrest Cotton said that while Auburn has experienced tremendous growth over the past several years, the urban core remained "static."
He said downtown will have to grow and improve in order to remain the heart of the city.
The Opelika-Auburn News reports (http://bit.ly/1mG6Lmx) that the city's planning commission saw a presentation by Cotton at its meeting Thursday.
Cotten said the plan involves breaking the city into five types of focus areas: traditional downtown, downtown expansion, urban neighborhood near Felton Little Park, urban neighborhood near downtown west; and urban neighborhoods requiring preservation.
The plan aims to increase housing and mixed-use buildings, walkable areas, parking and green spaces.
