PRICEVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Two men were charged with meth-related crimes following a bust in Morgan County, despite there being no meth present.

Sheriff Ana Franklin said the suspects had not yet made the drug, but were preparing to. Due to a new state law, authorities were able to arrest them.

The bust happened on Davis Street in Priceville around 2 p.m. Thursday. Investigators said two men had chemicals and other ingredients necessary to make methamphetamine. They had been watching the pair for awhile, and after the men bought more items to make the drug Wednesday night, authorities made their move Thursday.

No meth had been manufactured, but the men are still each charged with two felonies. State lawmakers recently made possession of paraphernalia used to make meth and attempting to commit a controlled-substance crime felonies.

"Now we have a new law that allows us to charge these folks based on timing," said Sheriff Franklin. "Last night, they were buying all the equipment and all the chemicals to start production on the meth lab, but had not actually put those chemicals together yet. Once we have that all together and it is in the form of what we know to be for manufacturing of a controlled substance, we can now charge them."

Jonathan Nolen and Daniel Duggard are each charged with attempting to commit a controlled-substance crime. They are also charged with felony possession of paraphernalia used to make meth.

It has been a busy week in Morgan County in the fight against meth. A bust in Hartselle on Wednesday involved a more potent form of the drug.
