HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Two Madison County Habitat for Humanity homes have received foreclosure notices and could go up for public auction in the next few days.

A Triana homeowner who received one of the two notices said she’s working with Habitat for Humanity administrators and a lawyer to save her home and plans on turning in money to the organization on Thursday to clear up the debt.

A second Madison County house could hit the auction block on July 15 if an agreement is not made. The house sits on the 6200 block of Melrose Drive. According to documents, the home has two mortgages on it that total more than $56,000. It is unclear how much is still owed and how long ago the homeowner made the last payment.

Habitat for Humanity's executive director Myra Sanderson said they do whatever they can to help people keep their homes. That includes going through a mandatory budgeting course before moving into a Habitat home.

“One of the toughest lessons you'll learn in life is accountability,” said Sanderson. “It is difficult, but we still have to hold homeowners accountable.”

According to Sanderson, four Habitat homes have been foreclosed on since fiscal year 2013. If the two current notices aren’t resolved in the coming days, then that number could grow to six.

Habitat for Humanity does provide a zero percent interest mortgage to people using their services. The money made off that mortgage is then reused into the organization which is why making on time payments is so important.

“We use those funds to continue other construction efforts or to go and purchase land,” said Sanderson.

According to Habitat for Humanity leaders, a typical mortgage will cover between a 20 and 30 year period.
