Investigators go to troubled Memphis cemetery

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say investigators have descended on a Memphis-area cemetery whose owner is charged with mishandling bodies.

Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation went to Galilee Memorial Gardens on Tuesday to gather evidence as part of a criminal probe into how bodies were buried at the cemetery.

Cemetery owner Jemar Lambert has been charged with theft of property and abuse of a corpse on claims that multiple bodies were buried in single graves and the cemetery kept inadequate burial records. Relatives of people buried at the cemetery have sued as well.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich says investigators have been sorting through cemetery records and establishing procedures to properly identify bodies and burial locations.
