ARAB, AL (WAFF) - Groundbreaking is expected soon in Arab for a $3-million retail development, but city officials are withholding what the project is – for now.

When the city made the purchase of the Northridge property several years ago, it came under fire because the retail development they talked about never happened. Years later, it is now getting started.

City officials confirmed three of the 21 acres at the Northridge site are now under lease for a retail development. Mayor Bob Joslin said the lease was signed June 19, and groundbreaking is expected within 120 days of that date.

The mayor said it will be a 20,000 square-foot facility, and is expected to bring 20-40 jobs to the area. Mayor Joslin said the city has received a verbal agreement for a matching grant of $460,000 for infrastructure in the location, and the match will be paid by the developer.

“It will be a road coming off 231 with a roundabout and a road going over to the new facility,” said Joslin. “Curb-and-gutter, streetscape, lighting, utilities and sidewalks.”

With the announcement, Joslin hopes they can find tenants for the remaining 18 acres. Joslin said the developer hopes to have the project completed by the end of the year.
