LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A couple faces domestic violence charges after an argument led to a man being shot in the foot Monday.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said the couple were traveling from Ardmore when they got into an argument on the intersection of Slate Road and Garden Road in Elkmont. That's when the man got out of the truck, took the woman's purse and took off on a bike he took out of the back of the truck. Officials said the purse contained $5,700.

According to Blakely, the woman got her 19-year-old son and went back to retrieve her purse. There was another argument, during which the two exchanged blows, and the man began to beat the son with an ax handle. The woman used the truck to hit the man's bicycle. At that point, officials said, the man was shot in the foot.

The man tried to run away with the gun and tossed it nearby. Officials said alcohol appears to play a role in the incident.

"The mother's intoxicated, so it's hard to get a whole lot out of her," said Sheriff Blakely. "We have got to get somebody down to the hospital as quick as we can, interview the person that got shot and try to piece it together."

Neighbors said they have never heard of anything quite like this on their street.

"It's such a quiet neighborhood and it is very nice here," said resident Mica Domerese. "It is kind of shocking that this was happening here."

Mark and Tina Scott were both charged with second-degree domestic violence assault. Officials said the gun has not been recovered at this time; additional charges are pending.
