HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Crews from multiple fire stations battled a field fire in western Huntsville that officials believe was started by fireworks.

It happened just before 6 p.m. on Barlowe Road in the extreme western portion of the Huntsville city limits, near the Limestone County line.

Three units from Huntsville Fire responded to the scene, as did three units from Seger Volunteer Fire Department. Flames could be seen covering a large portion of the field.Fire trucks had to shuttle back and forth between the fire hydrant and the field, and back again to wet down the perimeter of the area. By 7 p.m., approximately 30 acres of very dry wheat had burned.

Fire officials said it was lucky the windy conditions Monday didn't cause much of a problem in fighting the blaze, which was put out shortly after 7.

"If it had picked up a little more, we'd have had to work that much harder to get ahead of it," said Huntsville District Chief David Button.

Authorities said they had reports of someone shooting off fireworks in the area. Firefighters at the scene reported finding fireworks. It is believed they are the cause, but the investigation is ongoing.
