HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -  Huntsville police were called to the scene of an accidental injury on Saturday night.

Officers responded to a call from the Mapco gas station at University Drive and Memorial Parkway for a man with a severe injury to his hand.

Ronnie Fletcher, 54, was shooting fireworks and drinking, according to his son Douglas Fletcher, when he attempted to shoot an "artillery shell" firework while holding the tube in his right hand.

The firework malfunctioned and exploded in Fletcher's hand. He was transported to Huntsville Hospital to stabilize his life threatening injuries.

Fletcher was then expected to be transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for further treatment.

The investigation is pending.
