HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -  Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church's gun buyback continued on Saturday morning.

The gun buyback started on Friday and continued on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The event was created in response to the recent violence in the Huntsville area, the most recent being the shooting death of local teen Ashia Oliver encouraged the church to host the event.

Each person that dropped off a gun received a fifty dollar credit card in exchange.

Organizers said the event was in response to the murder of 18-year-old Ashia Oliver who was shot and killed at a gas station last month.

Senior Pastor O. Wendell Davis said, "For us, it was extremely painful. And so even in that, something horrific happening we hope something good will come out of it and that's what we're trying to do now."

Oliver's family attended event. They said events like this could give some meaning to a senseless tragedy.
