BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

As many people travel for a long holiday weekend, Louisiana officials are urging safety and patience on the roads.

They said the Fourth of July weekend is one of the deadliest holiday weekends because of car crashes. Whether you're travelling long distances or just down the road, law enforcement officials are urging safety and preparation, so that you don't become a statistic this Fourth of July weekend.

Members of Baton Rouge EMS and the Baton Rouge Police Department offered warnings about drinking and driving.

“This is going to be a bad weekend with all the people on the highway,” said Mike Chustz with BR EMS. “Traffic is going to be bad. We just highly recommend to not do it. Have a designated driver. If you don't, leave the car home, take a cab home or to wherever you're going and get one to come get you. It's not safe to do it, so please don't do it.”

“We're going to have DWI checkpoints in place and we're going to be checking individuals starting tonight and going through the entire weekend,” said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely with BRPD. “We also know it’s a party weekend. We expect and we hope that everybody is responsible in their actions while they're out there.”

Hopefully, if you were heading out of town, you got ahead of the mess Thursday and if you're staying in the Baton Rouge area this holiday weekend, you want to definitely heed those warnings for a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.
