BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The new Miss Louisiana for the Miss American Pageant said she wants the world to see different sides of Louisiana.

Lacey Sanchez won her crown on the last weekend in June. She was an LSU student pole vaulting athlete, who was pursuing a master’s degree in mass communications when she made it to the top in the pageant.

When talking about Louisiana in the limelight, she seemed to insinuate that it had some pretty silly reality shows.

“You see all these things on television, but what you don't see is how smart we are," Sanchez said. "We have engineers; we have chemists with the oil and gas industry. Of course, I'm partial to athletics here in this state. We can promote that. But then we have a huge cultural tourism industry with Mardi Gras. I just want everyone to see how diverse Louisiana is.”

Sanchez will head to the national competition in September. She also hopes to encourage kids to be more active.
