Firefighter treated for heat injuries after lumber yard fire reignites

Posted: Updated:
STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

A firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat-related injuries after a lumber yard fire reignited in Statesville early Friday morning.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital Friday morning and treated. He was released soon after.

It was the second time in less than 12 hours that crews had been called to the scene.

The first fire broke out at Godfrey Lumber Yard on the 1700 block of Amity Hill Road near Shelton Avenue just after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

Statesville firefighters reported a large fire upon arriving at the scene, and say that several county fire departments were called in to assist with the blaze.

The Sheriff's Office says the fire reignited early Friday morning.

Officials have not said what may have caused either fire. They are looking into the cause being weather related, but it could take days to know for sure.

Mike Spellman owns the Amity Hill Garden Center across the street.

"There was a little rolling thunder, but I didn't see any lightning. And a strike that close I would have heard," Spellman said.

Godfrey Lumber has been a staple in the community since 1940. Spellman tells WBTV the family's two sons now run the business.

"This is second generation, their dad and mom built the business and it's just terrible for them," Spellman said.

No word on if and when the Lumber Yard will start to rebuild.
