HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -  Law enforcement members across the state will spend July 4 keeping you safe on the road.

Extra state troopers will be out in full force during the holiday weekend safety blitz, which begins runs from Friday to Sunday.

“We’re going to be out along with the sheriff’s departments and local police departments and every agency,” said Trooper Curtis Summerville. “We’ll be out there for vigilance. We want people to see us. Our goal is not to get out and write tickets and take a lot of people to jail.”

“We don’t want to spoil your holiday, but if you do drink and drive, then we will have to do our job, and if that means putting you in jail, well then, that’s what we have to do,” Summerville continued.

Troopers urge drivers to wear seat belts and refrain from texting while driving. They will crack down on speeders, drunk drivers and other traffic violations.
