(WMC) - Memphis business owners are on alert Thursday after surveillance cameras captured a string of burglaries and are concerned with the holiday weekend quickly approaching.

The businesses are located in the 3600 block of Cherry Road in East Memphis.

Elite Plastering is exactly what it sounds like.

"We're a plastering contractor. We do exterior plastering or interior plastering is what we do," said Mike Labarreare with Elite Plastering.

He says two recent break-ins cost him $30,000 in supplies.

"I do not like a thief. I work too hard for my money for what we do," said Labarreare.

Elite isn't alone. Owners at almost every business on Cherry Road say they've been broken into at least once over the past year. Surveillance photos of one of the suspects are plastered on every door.

"Whoever is doing this, they're watching what's going on because they come out here and they move your cameras," said Labarreare.

In the video, a guy comes over a long pole and smashes the camera till it moves. Nothing is stolen, but the owners worry they might be next to get broken into.

"There's been a lot of break-ins.  At least once a week there's somebody getting broke in around this neighborhood," said Robert Johnson with Rushing Mechanical.

Johnson had $50,000 worth equipment stolen during a break-in.

"They've got it down to an art," Johnson said.

Business owners say they're looking for other options for protection. They are also requesting more patrols from the Memphis Police Department. Though, they wonder how the battle between police and city hall will affect them.

"I'm afraid it's gonna start hurting us worse," said Johnson.

Only time will tell.

"I just hope they catch him. Or whoever it is I hope they catch them," said Labarreare.

But, until then Cherry Road contractors will be plastered to their surveillance systems.

The contractors are working together. They say police quickly respond to the burglar alarms, but, so far, not quickly enough to make an arrest.
