HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Some Tennessee Valley-area children in uniforms of their own – Scouting outfits – learned from an older generation about wearing uniforms for their country.

Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and a few other volunteers surprised veterans at Tutt Fann Veterans Home Thursday morning.

Redstone Arsenal and Olive Branch Flower Shops donated bouquets of patriotic-themed arrangements to brighten the day for war heroes, as a small token of appreciation for serving.

Scouts said they got a lot out of it. So, too, did the veterans.

“It’s hard to say hey – how does a man feel?” said veteran Hubert Stamm. “Especially after he’s been wounded, or his buddies have died in our arms. It’s really something to think about and try to express to the younger generation today.”

“It touched me very much,” said Charles E. Billingsley. “It’s good to know that someone cares.”

Many of us do care – and we all say ‘thank you’ for serving, and we are grateful for the freedoms that we enjoy every day.

There are 150 vets at Tutt Fann; their personal histories span World War II all the way to the Gulf War. On July 10, the facility celebrates its 19th anniversary. The public is invited to visit that day and help celebrate.
