LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) -

Several recent drownings and a deadly boating accident have authorities urging residents to stay safe on the water as many families plan their Fourth of July activities.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is offering free boater safety courses. The courses cover information on equipment and legal requirements, navigation rules and more.

If you can't take the course, agents said people need to remember the same laws apply, no matter if they are celebrating on land or on the water.

"Just treat the waterway like you would a roadway,” said Lt. Will Roberts with LDWF. “Stay to the right and if you're going to be drinking, have a designated driver. A DWI on the water is the same as a DWI on the highway."

Wildlife and Fisheries offers an online safety course as well. The registration fee is $15.
